Sedation for Dentistry

Comprehensive conscious sedation for dental procedures, allowing patients with dental anxiety or complex treatment needs to receive care in comfort and safety.

Dental Procedures We Support

Dr Nienaber provides conscious sedation for the full range of dental procedures performed in accredited consulting rooms across Johannesburg and Gauteng. Whether you require a single extraction or a full-day restorative session, our sedation protocols are tailored to the procedure and to you.

  • Dental extractions, including wisdom teeth
  • Dental implant placement and bone grafting
  • Root canal therapy
  • Oral surgery
  • Extensive restorative work requiring prolonged treatment time
  • Procedures for patients with severe dental anxiety or phobia

How Dental Sedation Works

Our approach uses intravenous conscious sedation with Target Controlled Infusion (TCI) technology. A computer-controlled pump delivers precise medication doses tailored to your weight, age, and individual response. You remain conscious throughout, able to breathe independently and respond to your dentist, but you will feel deeply relaxed and unlikely to remember the procedure afterward.

Your dentist administers local anaesthetic as normal for pain control. The sedation manages anxiety, discomfort, and the passage of time. Most patients describe the experience as peaceful and report that a two-hour procedure felt like minutes.

Monitoring and Safety

Throughout the procedure, Dr Nienaber continuously monitors your heart rate, blood pressure, oxygen saturation, breathing, and ECG. Full resuscitation equipment and drugs are present at every case. The level of care is equivalent to what you would receive in a hospital operating theatre, delivered in the comfort of your dentist's consulting room.

Recovery

Recovery from dental sedation is typically rapid. You will feel drowsy for two to four hours and will need a responsible adult to drive you home. Most patients can resume normal activities the following day. Detailed pre- and post-sedation instructions are provided before every procedure.

Is Dental Sedation Right for You?

Dental sedation is particularly beneficial for patients who experience significant anxiety about dental treatment, who have a strong gag reflex, who require lengthy or complex procedures, or who have had traumatic dental experiences in the past. If you have been avoiding dental care because of fear, conscious sedation may be the path back to the chair.
