Sedation for Adults
Everything you need to know about conscious sedation: how it works, how to prepare, what to expect during and after your procedure, and when to seek help.
What is Conscious Sedation?
Procedural sedation and analgesia involves the careful administration of sedative medications to help you remain comfortable and relaxed during a medical or dental procedure. Unlike general anaesthesia, you maintain consciousness throughout. You will feel drowsy and peaceful, but can still breathe naturally on your own and respond to verbal instructions from the medical team.
Our sedation approach uses Target Controlled Infusion (TCI) technology, which provides computer-controlled, precise medication delivery tailored to your individual characteristics. This advanced system ensures predictable effects, minimises side effects, and promotes faster recovery compared to traditional sedation methods.
Throughout the entire procedure, you are continuously monitored by Dr Nienaber using state-of-the-art equipment tracking your heart rate, breathing, blood pressure, and oxygen levels. The goal is to create a safe, comfortable experience that allows your doctor or dentist to perform necessary treatments while you remain in a relaxed, anxiety-free state.
How to Prepare
Medical Preparation
Complete and submit your medical history form accurately, including all current medications, allergies, and medical conditions. Inform Dr Nienaber of any changes to your health status since completing the form. If you take chronic medications, discuss with Dr Nienaber whether to continue them on the day of your procedure.
Fasting Requirements
These requirements are essential for your safety and must be followed precisely. Failure to comply may result in postponement of your procedure.
- Cease all solid foods and milk at least 6 hours before your procedure
- Cease clear fluids (water, apple juice) 2 hours before your procedure
- Take only essential medications with small sips of water if approved by Dr Nienaber
Day of Procedure
- Arrange for a responsible adult to drive you to and from your appointment and remain with you for the rest of the day
- Wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothing with easy-access sleeves
- Remove contact lenses, jewellery, and dentures before the procedure
- Arrive 30 minutes early for pre-procedure assessment and preparation
- Bring a list of all current medications and your completed medical history form
No sedation will be provided if you arrive without a responsible adult escort.
What to Expect During the Procedure
Dr Nienaber will place a small IV line, usually in your hand or arm. Sedative medication is delivered through this line using TCI technology. You will begin to feel relaxed within minutes. Your dentist or doctor will administer local anaesthetic as required for pain control.
Throughout the procedure, Dr Nienaber monitors your vital signs continuously and adjusts the sedation depth to keep you comfortable. You will be able to breathe independently and may respond to simple requests from the clinical team. Most patients have little to no memory of the procedure afterward.
